Take Action: This week, the Tennessee State Senate passed Senate Bill 1304, a measure that would make private adoption agencies that deny LGBTQ couples adoption rights due to a so-called “religious exemption” eligible for state funding. Governor Bill Lee has indicated he would sign the bill as soon as it reaches his desk.
Let’s make this clear: SB1304 would be tax-payer funded discrimination. SB 1304 is not an “exemption” for the 184,233 LGBTQ Tennesseans who call their state home. With about 26-percent of LGBTQ adults who are raising their families in the state, anti-LGBTQ bills like SB 1304 would prevent LGBTQ adults from the same rights granted to their straight and cis peers.
No person in Tennessee should ever have to experience discrimination simply for being who they are. Adoption services and agencies should only focus on providing children a loving home, not use their mission as some political football for a political party.
Join the Tennessee Equality Project and GLAAD by demanding that Governor Lee veto this legislation rooted in prejudice and discrimination. Tell the Tennessee General Assembly that anti-LGBTQ hate has no place in your state.
